I expect that none of you will find this funny, simply because, to the best of my knowledge none of you spend much time wrestling with Critical Theory (more power to you) and are therefore unfamiliar with the majority of its proponents in spite of their importance within the field and, in many cases, within thought and philosophy generally.
But today, at our little Cotswold restaurant, we catered to a party of the local W.I. For the benefit of bemused Americans: that's the Women's Institute, of all facets of British culture, probably the one most consistent with its stereotypes: think flower arrangement, raffles, bake sales and home cooking competitions sprinkled with some admirable community work and charitable operations. Anyway, this particular dinner was chaired by one Judith Butler. Yes, I find that funny.
